There can only be a few people that we trust and love and hold dear throughout our lives. Not because we are emotionally incapable of knowing or loving more people but simply due to the various reasons of
- you will never meet everybody in the world
- demands of life
- different views, lifestyles or geographies render some social interactions impossible
- death. yes, death means we have 80 years or so to socialize
Another way to look at this limit would be Dunbar’s Number, which describes how our social interactions and ties hit a roof at an average of 150 people. How many people do you know?
Over the last weekend, i went camping at Pax Hill, up past ballarat and for the opening volley of the summer season, we were treated to some of the coldest nights since winter. Seriously, my nose gets sniffly thinking about it.
There were a range of activities there but for reasons unknown (read: we are lazybutts with lazy butts and failed to sign up for anything) we only went for camel rides and ate slush puppies, jumped on harness trampolines, or walked around. There was a party at night but the DJ’s were rostered on shifts and… well it was an eclectic mix.
No, the weekend was great, it was cold and almost lacklustre, the bedding was chilly, shoddy and sometimes broken (sorry Bennett) but it was still great. I spent a long, tiring weekend laughing, lounging and living with a group of people who i love and i cherish.
I also got mad at one of my friends. I snapped, and the words spill out of your mouth you know? And right there, occured our most excellent moment together.
No, you can’t ever go on summer camping trips without your friends. If the heavens have it in their wishes to leave bare the night sky and expose the stars, let the heat leach away from the ground and up into our atmosphere, if it is an intensely cold weekend, it is always good to have the warmth of your friends with you.

To date, i have never seen a television show like Community before. It carries with it a quiet air of self-confidence which only semi-masks its self awareness of how it has worn - since its first day - the dual sided badge of ‘quirky’ and ‘experimental’ and just how fine a line it trod with networks.
It’s a beautiful show, it plays like an old slightly out of tune ukulele that only benefits from the raffish sounds which result. There’s the constant slew of pop-culture references which reminds me of a spontaneous and off-the-cuff trivia night where each participant waits on the edge of their seats. There’s the sincere and carefully delivered observations and sentiments about life and friendship which sidestep tacky and contrived to arrive at genuine conclusions. The inexhaustible source of self aware nods and meta winks to itself and to the context of the show that reward many a vigilant viewer with bouts of uncontrollable giggling.
It’s due to be axed by the end of season 3 and honestly, thats heartbreaking. I can’t explain why the characters just mesh, or why the dean having a dalmatian fetish makes for compelling t.v, why i can’t say cool without resisting the urge to say it again 3 times in a row, i can’t explain why i see paintball as the best sport ever.
I can explain that community makes me happy. It makes millions of people happy, and honestly has the potential to make millions of more people happy if it’s not cancelled. I want to be optimistic about its outlooks, make happy sounds when Troy & Abed skits roll around or when my best friend Jake screams in frustration at a season finale. But in a world where i can’t walk into a school without being persecuted by overzealous teachers with a penchant for assbaggery - wait, wait thats another tumblr post…
But if the past is anything to go by, we have no control over networks, they axe shows that we might love and as pessimistic as this is, they might just axe Community.
If you love this show, go sign a petition, write a letter to NBC! or just go and tell other people about the show. I actually spent today watching season one with Jake and honestly, everyone else should tell their friends about it as well if they want to!
In the meantime… i’ll try to stay optimistic.
